ESL Program Levels

Terra Dotta University's ESL programs offer various program levels.  The coursework at each level is designed to challenge students and help them to expand their grasp of the English language.  The class sessions and group conversation sessions encourage students to practice their spoken English.  All ESL program levels concentrate on developing fundamental English skills.  Vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing are topics covered in all classwork and homework content.

The specific levels for each ESL program are as follows:
  • The Intensive English Program offers 4 levels of instruction.  Levels 1-2 help students to concentrate on developing fundamental English skills.  Course work emphasizes those skills necessary for effective oral and written communication.  Instruction covers all areas of language development, including:  practical vocabulary, basic language structures, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar.  In levels 3-4, students continue to develop fluency and accuracy.  Courses focus on comprehensive skills, academic writing, note taking, oral presentation skills, and communication skills.
  • The Communication Skills Program offers 4 levels of instruction.  Levels 1-2 help students focus on advanced grammar, reading, and writing.  Courses concentrate studies on business vocabulary, fluency, and accuracy.  The coursework challenges students in all areas of language development.  Levels 3-4 help students' listening, speaking, and academic writing skills.  These are crucial skills needed for integration into a professional career and will be useful in taking the TOEFL exam.  All levels in the Communication Skills Program feature some TOEFL prep coursework to prepare students for the exam.
When you take the English Proficiency exam (placement test), the ESL Office's reviewers will assess your test answers.  The reviewers will analyze the answers based on multiple criteria.  They will look for fluency, accuracy, and grammar in each of the written composition, listening comprehension, and oral interview sections of the proficiency exam.  Your score in each of these areas will determine where the reviewers place you within your desired ESL program.  The grading process is completed within 10 minutes.  You will be provided with a list of recommended and required classes for the level and program in which you were placed.  The recommended courses are required for graduation from your program and for advancement to another level.  The recommended courses are suggestions for you, specifically, according to your placement test scores in each of the three testing areas (written composition, listening comprehension, and oral interview).

As mentioned above, the Communication Skills Program offers TOEFL prep coursework throughout the ESL program session.  If you would like extra tutoring and/or TOEFL prep, come to the ESL Office within the International Student and Scholar Services Office (Dill Hall, suite 250) and the ESL advisors can workout a tutoring schedule for you.  The Language and Culture Center also offers tutoring and rooms for our Conversation Partner Program.  No matter what level you are placed, all of these resources are helpful for your success in Terra Dotta University's ESL programs.  Contact the ESL Office at 555-555-5555 for more information.
